Shackleton's advert

This took my fancy:

Ernest Shackleton needed men to go with him on his expedition to the South Pole. An advert in today's 'speak' might be:

"Men needed for expedition. Minimum five years experience. Must know how to sail. Come work for a fantastic captain."

The advert he actually placed was:

"Men wanted for Hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognitions in case of success."

The story of that 1914/15 expedition is well known, particularly for the extraordinary journey to and across Elephant Island by six men, including Shackleton, to mount a rescue mission for the remaining 21 men stuck on South Georgia island after the 'Endurance' sank after being crushed by ice.

Those men, attracted by this advert, were such a good 'fit' for the experience that no-one died. No-one ate the others, and there was no mutiny. What a great piece of wholly appropriate recruitment.

We had a very positive year since we were last at your place and are both so thankful that we managed to pull the rudder around at the last minute, due to your work with us. We have the tools and willingness to never end up in the same situation we were when we first came to you. Thank you very much for all you did for us and as you can see it really was worth it.
